I Need A BIG Sled...

Hey all,

I have finally come upon a project where I need a large panel sled. Up until now I have made do with my Osborne EB-3 miter gauge for my cross cuts. One project I am about to start is going to need more than 12" crosscut capacity from a sled. The largest I can go with the miter gauge is about 11.5". The other project is a stool and I need to be able to use some wedges to get the angle that I need.

My saw top is about 27" deep. I am thinking of making the sled at least 27" deep and almost as wide as the table. I have two options for the runners sled. The first option is to let the runner rub against the outside of the table. With this option I would put some retractable pieces on the underside of the runner so that the rail will grab the edge of the table. This will let me pull the sled back to have like 20" cross-cut capacity. The second option is to let the runners go in the miter gauge slots on the saw. I have T-slots on the saw, so I could place washers on the underside of the runners to engage the T-slots.

The reason I need the sled to grab the table is so I can pull it back further and make a wider cross-cut without the sled tipping up.

Any better ideas than above?

Thanks in advance.

Rob,
I use a chop box that will take a 36 inch wide panel. I set a roller stand under it when I need to pull it way back. I used hardwood runners in the miter slots. Niki has a blog with a hundred photos on how to build one of these. Check it out. I would not try to use the t-slot idea. I think you would wreck the bottom of the sled trying to let it hold itself up that way.
