Jim, one recommendation I have when I see posts like yours is to recommend Craigslist. Lumber deals do not appear every day but if you are patient they do appear with regularity and you can get some really good deals here.

Here’s a good source for many folks.

Plus E bay and Craig’s list as Scott suggested.

I go to woodworld on the north side. Pretty good selection. Friendly and helpful staff.

I prefer craigslist or the small mills located around illinois. Look up this list for a sawmill near you. I like this list because it is broken down by county.

If you don’t mind driving a bit (and being near Chicago I’d think you’re used to it) Kettle Moraine Hardwoods South store is a little bit north of you in Wisconsin, right on the West frontage road of I-94 ~1/2 mile North of Seven Mile Road. You can get pretty much any wood you want including exotics and Baltic Birch plywood and good quality hardwood veneer plywoods. Prices are reasonable and quite a bit less then what Woodcraft and Rockler charge for what they carry.

A little bit further drive (actually a rather long day trip) would be the Frank Miller Lumber Company in Union City Indiana. ( www.frankmiller.com ) This is one of the largest lumber mills in the country, with all the oak, maple, cherry, walnut, and other domestic woods that you could ever hope to find.. They also import just about every type of exotic wood, and stock other domestic woods with features like birdseye, curly, spalted, even bark enclusions. This is a real woodworker’s “candy store”.

Union City is on the Indiana-Ohio border about 20 miles East of US 27 and about 30 miles North of I 70.

Hi Jim of Chicago,

When I lived in Downers Grove, IL, I used to buy hardwood at Owl Lumber and Hardware/Hardwood in St. Charles. As of last February I stopped in there and they continue to have a great selection of wood.

Best wishes on all your woodworking endeavors.

Jim

I second the Kettle Morraine Hardwoods suggestion, I go there frequently to pickup lumber. They have a great selection of domestic and exotics in all types of sizes and quality.
