Hi guys and gals

Just got a e mail notice about Charles Neils Web show” Mastering Woodworking with Charles Neil”
he is now offering it on DVDs as part of a monthly subscription of $ 26.95 a month so if you can’t get a good feed on line you will still be able to see the show.
even though it comes in fine for me I still added the DVD option. It’s a super show with lots of super tips.

He also has a sneak preview of the show,
Here’s a link

When watching it helps to open it up and put it on pause for a few minutes to let it load.

what is charles using for his video format? in todays media capabilities ,theres no reason one should pause playback for it to cache.

I’m asking with the purpose of maybe helping out and finding a better way to deliver that video without the fiddling around with it.

PS. I have not watched his videos, so I don’t really know

Got the same email myself today, and I will probably subscribe to the DVD option.

I’m not sure what player or streaming technology Charles is using, but one of the reasons I have not subscribed to his show is that I do not like to be restricted to viewing longer form presentations online. AFAICT, his show video is not available in a downloadable, storable format like MP4, WMV, etc.

For no particular reason, I prefer to download to a local storage device and watch offline. That is why I have purchased so many of his DVD sets … they are sitting on my shelf and I can load/watch them any time I want.

Almost forgot … ‘CATCH YA LATER”.

sharon and Dane
I know that Charles and Sherri have worked on this issue and this seems to be a good solution to the feed problem. I’m not a computer guy so I don’t know how this feed stuff works.

In this months newsletter Sherri talked about how to download the show. I just downloaded the Real Player program that you need. I am trying it out as we speak. Check out this link for more information.

We’re trying different formats as we go on. Since Sherri wants the main emphasis to be bringing people to the site, we’re showing in .flv format so the player can be embedded into the page.

Part of our issue is with trying to get good parameters for the .flv so it will stream well and still have a reasonable presentation quality. We’ve recently moved to a CDN to help with the streaming issue which has made some difference. We’ve discussed also making .MP4 feeds available. It’s sort of a new area for all of us and we’re trying to work out the issues.

Any suggestions will most certainly be investigated.

Hmmm, I suppose I should mention that I’m the guy to blame when the web site doesn’t do what it’s supposed to :) I’ve done the design and the other “tech” work for the CNW site, both the open education one and the “Mastering Woodworking” sides of things.

I did not realize it was possible to download the video in file format and save it.

I have RealPlayer, Windows Media, and a few others, but my preference is WinAmp Pro. If I run into a format it does not support, I just run the file through AVS Video Converter to get the format I want.

a1Jim – no worries, glad to help. That’s how I got involved with Charles and Sherri in the first place.
