Here comes another new one! From Minnesota.

I’m getting back into the hobby, and Lumberjocks looks like a really good resource. Figured I’d introduce myself since I may be back with a lot of questions!

I started woodworking as a hobby back around 2001 or so… but I only got a couple of years in before I had to put all my tools in storage to get my house ready to sell. Then it was moving into a townhouse. In 2012, my new wife and I bought a new/old house and finally got my tools out of storage. However, those tools only got crowded into a corner of the basement with boxes stacked all over them.

In 2014, we started on an addition to our house… which includes some new basement space for my shop!

We are doing a LOT of work on the addition and house remodel ourselves (well, mostly me, but my wife is very involved in the planning!) So that takes up most of my free time. BUT, I recently framed up some walls in the new woodshop area, and will be doing electrical rough-in soon, so that has me thinking about woodworking again!

By around this time next year, hopefully I’ll bet setting up the shop and starting to get time to work down there. First order of business will be cabinets. For the house. Although before that I may try to take the time to build a new router table and assembly table.

Woodworking for me is on a long-term time scale. It’s taking a while to get back to it, but I expect to be able to spend more and more time in the shop as the years go on.

Here’s an early picture of my woodshop space (1000sf) just after the slab was poured. I don’t have anything more recent.. hopefully I’ll get another picture after the electrical rough-in and getting some lights in.

And one picture of the overall addition. My part-time job.

Good luck sir. Ask away. Great hobby we have here.

Love that porch man! As someone who has a basement shop and a walk up (5 steps) to the outside, how did you allow to get your machines in/out

I’m designing my last shop now, and I want ground level :)

Looks awesome enjoy cheers! (post pics with all the toys in)

Thanks bones, the porch was one of our better design ideas.

I’m with you on the ground level. The basement has a walkout on the opposite side of the house from the porch view. In my previous shop I had to go down a full flight of stairs, then had a 180 turn at the bottom. Could not get a 4×8 sheet in and bringing heavy tools in was a bear!
