This sounds familiar…...

The US Labor Department determined a small woodworking shop owner was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him.

“I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded the agent.

“Well, there’s Jake my finisher who’s been with me for 3 years, I pay him $900 a week.

The apprentice Tom has been here for 6 months, and I pay him $500 a week.

Then there’s the half-wit that works here about 18 hours a day. He makes $10 a week and I buy him a case of beer every Friday,” replied the owner.

“That’s the guy I want to talk to; the half-wit,” says the agent.”

The owner says, “That would be me.”

Isn’t it fun working for yourself?

All the freedom to do what ever you want, come and go as you please, and making more money than you know what to do with.
Ya Right!!!!!!
I had two guys working for me over the summer, for about six weeks I really needed the help. But then when work started to slow down all I do is worrry about their family’s. In order to not lay them off, I was digging into my pocket to keep them going doing stuff around the shop. On the hope that things would pick back up.
In the end I ended up laying them both off, but I paid a big price for keeping them on. My problem is that I put myself in their shoes, of being laid off in this economy. I know there is no where else around here for them to go to work.
I have to learn that I am not a social service agency. Some times it really sucks to care, I just can’t seem to get my head around not caring about my crew. My wife has laid down some rules that I am going to have to learn to live with. She does the banking and the books. She see’s the bottom line, and that is what I need to keep in mind if we are going to survive.
I just hope that with the new year comes some improvement to rhe economy.

Taigert – I agree we have to treat it like a business. I worked in a large manufacturing plant (quite a few years ago) and tough times hit for the economy but the owner didn’t want to lay people off because it was close to the holidays. He was going to wait for them to pass, BIG MISTAKE! By the time the holidays came and went we were almost broke as a company, he finally did the layoffs but if it wasn’t for a few big jobs breaking at the same time I don’t know if they would have survived as a company.

Being your own boss means you get to decide which 12 hours you work in the day.
