Ok…. heres what happened…...

the lovley bride and i when to Hobby Lobby yesterday ( yea i know… shopping right after Christmas). As we entered the store, i saw a piece of furnature i fell in love with. IT was a secratary type writing desk very similar to one i was wanting to make.

now here i was …. without a tape measure !!

So like any good lumberjock what do i do ???... I go to fabrics and buy a flexable tape measure for material.

I then spend the next hour measuring they piece and making notes (Also took a few pictures with the cell phone). I was just waiting for someone to ask me to leave but they never did. And, insted of shopping for scrappbooking stuff (yuk) i made a productive trip out of it.

As we were leaving the wife turned to me and said ” you are a sick ….sick…man”

Ha Ha! That is awesome! I basically did the same thing at my In laws yesterday. My Mother in law showed me a beautiful old hutch she picked up at an estate sale… Within minutes I was pulling drawers out to see how it was constructed. My Father in law walked by and witnessed me doing it and commented “He’s Got It Bad”....lol

What is sick about doing a little research?

Plus there is an added benefit of not having to follow her around the store (I hate to ‘shop’ unless I am buying tools or lumber!).

I’m with TheDane. There’s no sickness there, only productive use of otherwise wasted time. It is my firm belief that it is the duty of all LumberJocks to do just as you did.

We have a great support group at this website, we are enablers, and we love it. Our spouses will always know we love them, but will always question wether they outrank wood.
I too am sick, sick of not enough shop time.

I am always on the lookout for good ideas….and I love to see how things are made….so if it really is a sickness I got it bad…(is there a doctor in the house???)......I always have a tape in my truck…and also on my keyring (they are nice turning projects/gifts – see American Woodturner Summer 2009 issue) so when the opportunity presents itself….I have the proper measuring devices right at hand….LOL…I was sure when they made cell phone cameras, that they had us in mind (I keep an extra memory card on mine for those “special occassions”)....and by the way….I always thought this was normal behaviour for woodworking afficianados?

We have a rule in this house not to throw stones, so I don’t get the “you’re a sick man” comments from her. Not when she’s got 6 knitting machines, a spinning wheel, drum carder, and a 50” jack loom in the living room because there’s no room for it in her 11’ x 12’ craft room, which is full of “not the right yarn.’

We feed each other’s addictions. I build her fiber finishing/spinning/knitting/weaving tools. Problem solved – for now anyway…

My son gave me a really nice little tape measure for my key chain, and I always have a small note pad. My wife gave up on trying to storebreak me years ago. She told me that I’m hopeless & that she’s not going to waste her time or energy trying to teach me manners any more. I’ve had sales people ask me to buy or leave others have provided me with info on the item.
I’ll never change….....................
