Topic tags/keywords: question maple outdoor

Living in Phoenix, I have seen maple turn a dark golden yellow on doors, but I was curious what happens to it if left untreated. For Phoenix we do experience rain with mostly dry, but I am thinking of using it for some exterior light sconce condition and wondered if it would eventually turn gray or just stay yellow for most of its useful life. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Maple is not resistant to outdoor exposure, maybee it can stand-up to desertic conditions but even finished, will not live long outdoor and will develop rot and grow mushrooms.

I believe, if left unfinished or in wet conditions it would turn gray, if left in the sun it would turn white and if protected from weather and harsh sun it would turn yellow.

I have two maple cuts from a crotch of a large maple tree that have been outside, but sitting under the roof of my wife’s potting bench, so no rain has hit it for the last two years. It has turned a beautiful light gray. Take a knife and scrape off a bit, and you find the normal maple wood color underneath.

I also have a big cut from a maple log that still has the bark that is seeing some rain. Has some rot and those white pesky mushrooms or fungus that grow. It is pretty much firewood now. It is more of a brownish gray.
