As basically a beginner woodworker, I can use all the help I can get. Any ideas that might help me reach the next level. Well since what time I’m not working on something, I’m looking for things to work on. Tools, jigs, furniture, techniques anything and everything. Well I might be the only one, but in case there are others that are looking for the best, or newest ideas, or something that re-affirms the tested tools of the trade, any help available, I want to do whatever my part might be to be a helpful source here at Lumberjocks.com Having said all that, I found a glue Application Chart from Woodsmith that gives the low-down and your basic woodworking glues. You can see it and download it here |

That’s a pretty handy chart. It should be printed out and hung up on the wall. Here’s another site that is pretty cool, and easy to use. |

Obi, I have a friend who has a very well equipped shop. His hobby is making jigs for woodworking. But as far as I can tell, that almost all he makes – jigs. I’m not being critical, because I’ve copied a number of his jigs and they are very useful. Some are very simple, whilst others are quite complex. One of the shop items he made is almost entirely of his own design. He turned a small vacuum cleaner into a mini-cyclone. The mini-cyclone filters out all of the larger particles (chips & dust) before the air passes through the vacuum cleaner’s filter. I’ve been using one of these for four years, and it’s fantastic. I will write up on this under a separate thread. -- CanuckDon "I just love small wooden boxes!" http://www.canterburybaptist.org/ |

I was hoping that everyone would start putting their jigs, and little things in this thread so I wouldnt have to go looking all over for a specific item. Like jigs … you could put them on your site with a direct link, or you could put the picture here. I’m getting too old and Lumberjocks is getting too busy to go try to find like items in a different “Drawer” |

The Mortise and Tenon jig shown here is one designed by David Dundas in Sydney Australia. I made this after first having purchased a commercial M&T Jig that I thought was crap. I ended up giving the commercial jig away. This one is very simple, but works very well. The CAD generated drawing below are done by David Dundas. If you send him an email, I believe he will send you instructions on making it. dldundas@hotmail.com If it’s not clear in the photo and drawings, the router sits on the platform above the rectangular opening. The fence at the rear of the platform can be adjusted from to back, and the two side-stops can be adjusted for width of the mortise. The router-bit sits through the rectangular opening. (It’s best to use a spiral bit which helps to clear the debris.) The wood being routed sits flush up against the bottom of the platform and against the large vertical face to which it is clamped with G-clamps,

Quote Bill: ”That is a great looking M&T jig Don. Tell David he should patten it before someone starts making and selling them.” Bill, David is a great guy, retired like me and one exceptional woodworker. He may well already hold a patten on this jig. I know he has written articles in Aussie Woodworking mag’s on its construction. He used to send a step-by-step PDF file to anyone asking for it – not sure that he still does that. I have this, but do not feel at liberty to send it on without his permission. I was a little concerned about posting these drawings here, but he has already done so on an Australian woodworking forum. (In fact these drawings are linked to that site.) -- CanuckDon "I just love small wooden boxes!" http://www.canterburybaptist.org/ |

What does it take to get some people involved in this? I’m a wood freak and I wanna see your goodies. I want to see your tool. Whether it’s a lathe, a drill, I want to see your hand planes. I want to see you jigs. I want to see what makes you the craftsman you are. I wanna see your mallets, hammers, files, rasps, saws, I NEED TO KNOW, if I want to grow. Can you share this with us ??? Don understands the need I have to buy new tools, or better yet, make them if I can. If you can share your knowledge, then for cryin out loud share it. |

Obi, I’m beginning I should be getting some kind of consultation fee for this. Here’s the HNT Gordon set of hand made tools in which I have started to invest. I have all of the planes shown here without the brass trim. These are incredible planes specifically designed for tough Australian hardwoods with changing grain direction. Terry Gordon is a terrific guy and goes out of his way to make sure that his customers are satisfied with his products. Visit his web site and have a careful look at these planes. Take note of the thickness of his plane irons. -- CanuckDon "I just love small wooden boxes!" http://www.canterburybaptist.org/ |

Tony, I never hears this one before. Where do you boy Velcro backed sand paper? On an electric sanding knife???? -- CanuckDon "I just love small wooden boxes!" http://www.canterburybaptist.org/ |
|

Don My source in Sydney has just dried up, apparently the manufacturer is now only selling it for the use of wood turners, e.g. disc size. Re the electric knife, well I raided my kitchen acquired the knife, got some Velcro from the local Spotlight (a place at which my wife and others congregate to purchase linen, sewing things, curtain material etc). Then glue the Velcro to the blade, having ground off the sharp edges, and then you have another labour saving device, particularly useful for smoothing narrow spaces et al. If you are really clever you could put different grades on either side of the blade!! -- Bandsaw Box Plans |

One trick I recently learnt of, from a UK forum, is when gluing veneer to irregular shaped enclosed space, inflate a party balloon to apply an even amount pressure within the enclosed space! One wonders whether it could also be used to attach the lining of box drawers? -- Bandsaw Box Plans |

I am starting to look for jigs to help improve my results as well. I received the M&T jig plans from David Dundas, and hope to build it soon. So far, I have made a very simple cross cut sled, and a panel cutting jig for a table saw. Both have helped me tremendously, improved my results, and also saved time. So, I have seen the light and want to make more jigs. -- Bill, Turlock California, http://www.brookswoodworks.com |

To overcome the unsightly dimple occasioned on using a Forstner bit, use a similar sized bit with the sharp pointy end ground off. So you use one with the point end to start the hole, then use the non pointy bit to finish the hole, resulting in a smooooth bottom (what more could one ask for?) -- Bandsaw Box Plans |
