This is an ancient 1” x 42” vertical belt sander given to me by a neighbor.I bought new belts. with the belt installed (table removed for clarity) there is about a 3/16 gap along the left edge of the vertical backer plate. There is not enough room to move the drive pulley to the left. With the 3 7/16uts removed from the spring loaded idler assy I can almost got the belt aligned by placing a shim (washer) below the bolts that hold the idler assy to the base assy. I don’t know if I do this will the tracking be a problem? The drive pulley is convex the idler is flat.

Any suggestions? Thanks
