Topic tags/keywords: american chestnut

A bit ago I posted about an American chestnut tree that recently died. I dropped it this past weekend so here are some pictures. I was bummed that the center rotted out but there will still be lots of good wood coming from it. Last picture is for the wood turners out there- bowls specifically. These chunks are 15”x13” and 6” thick…burl. American chestnut it rare enough but to find pieces like this has been exciting.

ErikF-
Did the chestnut blight kill that tree? Any idea how old it was? I’m surprised that any that big were still standing.

Chuck

A lot of the trees interior was rotted out so it may have been old age- it was 68” wide across the butt log. There are a lot of shoots coming off the stump that look perfectly healthy.

Awesome! A ton of lathe bowls there!

Heck, that center pith has to be removed anyway…I don’t mind if it rots out. :)

Give us a shout when you start selling blocks of wood.

That will yield some nice wood for projects. Congratulations.

What a sight Erik. Looks like some spectacular wood there!
