I picked up a SpaceSaver 6, still in the in the box. I’ve been thinking about this for a while for the winter months, in the summer I have about 300 or more sq. ft. dedicated to edibles. I read a blog by a lady quite a while back that did a cost analysis. (Yes, she did a cost analysis.) The main item there that concerns me is the energy cost, I ran the rough numbers it my head, maybe $6 a month if I run the lights at night (I’m on Time Of Use billing), worth it for fresh veggies if it works. See I’m trying hard to reduce my electricity usage (workshop has an exemption :) ), already have LED lights and lighting installed and been totally CFL for years.

So, how well do these things work? I’m gonna do the herbs that came with it and I bought tomatoes, love fresh tomatoes. But I can see lettuce and greens too for fresh salads. Kinda bass ackwards, asking after I have it, but it’s not too late to return it.

So, does it work? Well? What have you grown?

I’ve done starts indoors and tried a cold frame that was about 32 sq feet. More trouble than it’s worth, veggies are too cheap. Getting ripe tomatoes is always a pain. In the NW, getting night time temps consistently above 55* F so fruit will set is always marginal. Hand pollination indoors is a bit tricky to say the least :-))

we grow things in the summer time not so much for cost reduction – but because it’s fresh, and we know exactly what was in the soil, and what wasn’t… however we have everything in raised beds outside (so not to mix the soil with whatever was in the ground before) and in the winter it freezes, and left as is. for lack of time we never tried anything indoors/heated, so it would be interesting to see what others have to say, and what your experience will be like.

I compost everything that comes out of our kitchen (except meat of course). Then I throw the compost into the garden. The offset of this is we get interesting things popping up all over the place. Lately, we have had some button tomatoes come up. Previously we have had pumpkins, which I dont encourage, Peppers (Capsicum for the Australians) and various herbs. It is a bit of fun to find a plant in amongst my decorative plants with fruit on it.

The other thing about this is it has seriously reduced our garbage output.
