This morning when we came to work, there was a large cart (like the large ones you see at a hospital they toss bags of laundry into) in the parking lot in front of our office full of “trash”. My first thought was someone had done some work in an office this weekend and this bin was trash from that. My second thought was “man, if I had a truck I would take the two hollow core doors on the pile there. Those would make great work surfaces”.

As the morning has progressed, there has been much discussion on who put the stuff there. Most people think it was a homeless person. We work in a pretty decent area, but do have several homeless people around. So, most people have been thinking it was a homeless person who left it there.

The part that bothers me is there have been a few people walk up or drive up and look through the items in the bin. And, every time someone does, someone in the office has to make a comment about it. Followed by 3-4 people getting up to watch them go through the stuff. It’s kinda starting to bother me. First off, I do that. If I see something someone has just tossed out that is in good condition (I’m not a hoarder either) I see nothing wrong with reusing it for something else. I think most of us here feel that way.

Second off, some people don’t have it as good as you (meaning the people in the office). So what if they want to take some of the stuff and reuse it. Don’t make a big deal about it. And it’s not like they are pulling rotten food out of the bin. It’s office type stuff. They aren’t hurting anyone. It just kinda bothers me when people judge those who are less fortunate then them., y’know?

Yeah, I’ve been one for “big trash days” all my life. Furnished more than one early apartment with stuff people threw away. When we moved here from the UK I rented far too small a van. We ended up having a guy come and haul what wouldn’t fit away to the dump. I asked him how much of the stuff he hauls is perfectly useful. His answer? Most of it.

As for people’s attitudes: Let ‘em judge. It lets you see who you might actually like to know ;)
