I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good wood / plywood supply place in DFW? Specifically I’m trying to find a local source for things such as prefinished plywood, premium veneer plywoods, and rough lumber (cherry, maple, oak, etc). Of course we have Rockler and Woodcraft as well as the home stores but they either they just don’t have the selection or the pricing (R & W have wood- but it seems pricey).

Thanks and happy woodworking!

David, when I see requests like this I generally recommend looking on Craigslist, if you haven’t already done so. It is a pretty good way to locate deals on lumber. Lumber deals on Craigslist are kind of hit and miss but you can find some pretty good buys from time to time.

Another source is But this tends to include the retail outlets that you are already familar with. Retail outlets, such as Woodcraft, Rockler, Lowe’s, do have an assortment of lumber but you pay a premium price for it. If you are interested in finding a source of domestic rough lumber you would be better off finding a local sawyer or sawmill that can meet your needs.

I am not familiar with the Dallas Ft Worth Area. There may be some LJs who know the plywood and hardwood suppliers in your area.

My personal experience has been doing a google search for hardwood for my city and surrounding area and then visiting those places to see what they stocked. The place I like the best is one that sells mainly plywood, but has a limited selection of hardwood and the real prize is a discount rack of hardwoods. These are broken, warped etc, but at bargain pricing. So it is fun picking through their rack to find something that I can salvage. Most importantly, I like doing business with them.

Wood World (near 635 and 75) has a very nice selection but it is very expensive. I was at Hardwood Lumber Company last week (near Loop 12 and 35E) and picked up some very nice wood at a great price, but the selection isn’t great. They moved down the street about a year and a half ago and their inventory is way down from what is was. You can still find a good selection of the basics. They can get you whatever you want quickly. Another LJ gave me the name of a guy down in Burleson/Mansfield. His name is Fritz Hannaman. If you want his info send me a PM.
