Topic tags/keywords: bandsaw help advice question

I’d like some advice on a 14” bandsaw on CL. The owner says it needs a new guide. How big of a job is it to change out a guide? I have a 12” and would really like to move up to a 14”. The price is right if it won’t cost too much to make it run.
Also, was this generally a good model?

To replace the guides should be really easy.
Which type of guides are on the saw?
Most 14” band saw are basically the same, not much difference.
Could you go to 17” as you are going to out grow this one very fast?
What is the price? I cannot see it.

Free is always a good price if it works if not this only more trash in your shop.

A free BS and you are asking if you should go for it??! Where is my 2×4 so I can slap you up side the head. The real question is if it’s still available, as it isn’t going to be out there for very long. OWWM rule #5 springs to mind.

Cheers,
Brad

PS: That machine is a clone of the Delta, and parts should be available for it. Worse case would be you decide not to fix it, and slap it back out on CL for $50 or so as a parts machine (and maybe keep the motor for yourself :)

Yep, I’m keeping that in mind. I searched for parts for this BS and all are discontinued. I hear a lot of them are similar but I don’t have any idea which ones share parts. Some link mentioned Carter guide which I think this link says would cost $179.

Trying to find parts that you don’t even know if you need or not is kind of a waste of effort. Get the machine, see what it needs. Most owners are completely unable to accurately describe the machine, even when it’s sitting there in front of them. Could be something as easy as just needing new HSS guide blocks (or existing ones are torn up and just need re-facing), which are just a few bucks and can be sourced just about anywhere. You won’t know until you have your hands on it.

Cheers,
Brad

“free”? Nothing to lose I guess if the motor works. As noted above I don’t think there is much difference between any of the 14” brands other than color. Roller bearings behind the blades (top and bottom) and a pair of “pinch blocks” (top and bottom) towards the teeth.
