Topic tags/keywords: stain finish

I bought gel stain to use on an oak picture frame yesterday. I had always planned on using the stain, then applying a varnish on top. However, the gel stain says it includes a polyurethane. Do I need to use additional varnish or should I avoid it? Thanks!

It depends on the sheen you are wanting. If you only put the gel it will be flat, almost natural looking. If it were me I would probably coat over it just for the added protection if anything. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your finished project.
