Topic tags/keywords: wood lumber sawmill hardwood

So this was an old forum that was about hardwood supplies close to Lake City FL but it is really old so I thought I would post another…,

I’m in need of some decent lumber supplies, all I have access to is lowes or Home Depot and that’s not cutting it! Anyone know where I can get some decent hardwood supplies at a good price??

I’ve been dancing with the idea of milling my own supply, I have access to cherry, oak, walnut, and things of that sort, anyone tried to cut there own logs without spending tons of money?

Hood Distribution
3106 W. 45th St
Jacksonville, FL 32209

Will Call is only from 0800-1200
I have purchased a lot from them. It has only been poplar, walnut and cherry. The thickest I have gotten is 8/4. It has all been good. I do not think they sell figured wood except maybe birds eye maple.

I deal mostly with Florida Southern Plywood.
I know several shops who deal with A&M
Both are in Jacksonville.

I can’t see how buying your own mill can pay for itself unless you want to start selling lumber.

If you have access to the trees, I would have it custom milled.

I have a friend in Sanderson who is very good and reasonable.
I can give you his # if you PM me.

There’s a guy who has a small lumberyard just South of Fort White. (not hard to find) This is not far from you.

He has a portable WoodMizer bandsaw mill and can come to your location, saw your logs into boards, and then take them to his kiln.

Another option would be to take a short vacation trip to the Frank Miller Lumber Company in Union City Indiana. This is a huge 100 year old mill. Their retail store has a remarkable inventory of domestic and imported woods. This place is like a “dreamland” for woodworkers.

I am in Jacksonville too. I have noticed Gerald recommending Hood Distribution for wood. Do you know what the board foot Walnut prices have been lately?

Chipmunk is closed. Just call Hood. I should be remembered that Willcall is from 0800-1200.
