I’m building a nightstand and the drawers are simple face drawers on wooden runners. What I’m finding with the first drawer is that it hitches left to right as you push it in. What are my options for fixing this? Will simply waxing help? Should I sand or cut a bevel on the back corner to keep it from catching? Should I redesigns the drawer and use metal slides if I really want it to go smooth?

Advice is welcome.

I design wood sliding drawers to fit snugly into their openings. I like the drawer box to have about 1/16” play in the carcase opening. Make the runners about 1/32” shorter than the grooves in the drawer (1/32” play height-wise). I like the runners narrower than the groove (width-wise) so the runner doesn’t drag on the inside of the groove. A very light chamfer on the edges of the runners is a good idea as well.

A piston fit is better than a sloppy fit.

Waxing not only the runners and grooves, but also the drawer sides will help improve the action.

If you find there is too much slop between the carcase opening and the drawer, try adding some slick tape. It is made from UHMW plastic with very low friction.

All that said, I never expect wood-on-wood slides to perform as smoothly as ball bearing slides. I only use wood slides for occasional use drawers.
