I am going to be building a simple 4 legged stool, and I came across a plan, but it calls for a ‘hand reamer’ to make a hole in the seat that is narrower on the inside than and wider on the outside. I found some reamers on line for a hand brace, but I don’t have one. Any ideas?

You could probably make one with a steel blade clamped in a dowel. Drill the hole close to size on the angle then, ream it to finish size.

Try the internet under “bridge reamner” and also check Lawson Products. See if you can find the degree of taper as they come in varying tapers. Good luck.

You could use a straight sided hole and saw a split or slot in the tenon of the leg to accept a tapered wedge which would tighten the tenon in the hole as you drive it in. Like the wedge in a hammer or ax handle. If the mortise is all the way through the seat you can put the wedge in from the top. If it is blind you can start a smaller wedge in just before you insert the tenon into the hole. As you pound the leg in the wedge will bottom out and move into the slot. Watch the wood grain to avoid splitting as the wedge is driven home.

Check garage sales and flea markets for drill braces. There are always some there at a cheap price.

This is a bit unorthidox…but… Rent a pipe reamer from your local rental yard…
