I picked it up at a auction today for $2. I noticed it is pretty beat up, and the edges are tore up from the years of rust, not entirely square, cant see the numbers…..

Is it salvagable to be used? Or is this just a collector piece that will just have to be displayed?

Thanks

Not too bad really.

You can clean up the rust than lightly dress the edges with a file as long as the blade sits tight in the body. I never use the ruler on my antique square as they are pretty faded as well but it’s still a useful tool.

With that amount of pitting I don’t think you have much chance of saving the numbers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t clean it up and use it as a square if you can get it squared up. That brass inlay also doesn’t look like the shape of the Stanley’s I have, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have a variety of shapes. Nice find for $2, clean it up and put it back to use.

Found it could be a number 74, or 20.

Also wondering if it could have been a sister company. But i found some pics on good, but the pics i found had the dimple in the handles. But the same brass shape.

Sure clean it up, use it and enjoy it.
