Topic tags/keywords: stanley 8 lever cap It’s a sad day for me… I was happily joining some White Oak and needed to touch up the blade on my Type-4 #8. When I went to release the lever cap the bottom part of the lever itself broke. This is the section that the pin runs through. This plane was manufactured 1880 – 1890 from what I have been told. It’s been a great plane for the $20 I paid for it. Any Ideas where I can find a replacement lever cap? I’m not worried if it’s from the same period; just that it works. It’s funny really, I just put a Hock blade in it 2 weeks ago. Guess that’s what I get for upgrading! :) -- Chris |

Bah. I have one for a #7. I also checked Ebay and no dice. You could keep checking it. Then there is Bob Kaune’s Hand Plane Parts. May cost a bit more… -- We must guard our enthusiasm as we would our life - James Krenov |

Thanks Wayne! I did not know about Bob Kaune’s site. I’ll give him a try I’ve already spoken with Patrick of Patrick's Blood & Gore AKA Superior Works. Had no luck there…. I’ll let you know if I can find the part. If I can’t I guess I’ll just beg my wife to let me purchase a shiny new L&N #8. Yeah, right!!!! Won’t hold my breath on that one. LOL -- Chris |

That or a Bedrock 608. Saw a wonderful one sell on ebay this week. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280160690088&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=018 -- We must guard our enthusiasm as we would our life - James Krenov |

Wow! That was pretty cheap for a 608 in that condition. That buyer got it at a steal! -- Chris |

Just create a search on Ebay in Stanley tools and watch…........I had purchased a #8 plane that was represented as in fine condition and the pictures looked great so I bid and won, when I got it the lever cap was cracked and chipped right where it contacts the plane iron, it did still work ok but I wanted it to be replaced. I made the search for “Lever Cap” and “Cap Iron” and just watched my email, took about three weeks but one popped up and I bought it. Patience is the key, somewhere out there is a broken plane that someone will part out, usually on ebay. considering your $20.00 initial investment you could spend a good bit on this one part and still not be hurt. In the mean time a #6 or #7 lever cap should keep you planing if you are not doing real heavy work as the blade will not be supported entirely across its width but well enough to shave an edge. I hope you find your parts! -- So Much Wood - So Little Time! -- |

Also, I’m going plane hunting later in the week. I will keep my eyes open for a parts plane or possibly a lever cap. I’m kind of kicking myself for not bidding, a LN #8c is $500…. I have a Sargent 424 I want to replace in my bench planes. Good idea on the email notifications Chris. I will have to give it a try in the future. -- We must guard our enthusiasm as we would our life - James Krenov |

Wayne, Did you say that you have purchased from Bob Kaune before? He has the lever cap I need but I can’t seem to get a hold of him. The cap if $55.00; LMAO—- I only paid $20.00 for the plain to begin with. I guess it shows what a steal it was to begin with! -- Chris |

I have not purchased anything from him. I would be patient and keep my eyes on ebay. -- We must guard our enthusiasm as we would our life - James Krenov |

Craigslist. Never know. You might just find the replacement and extra parts to boot. I know that might be iffy with a #8 but…. -- Jeff, St. Paul, MN |

Thx Caliper, It’s especially iffy with my plane. It’s on of the earliest #8’s. But, it’s worth a try! -- Chris |

I didn’t consider that, you may be right. I’m constantly surprised by what you can find there. It’s a patience game like Wayne says. -- Jeff, St. Paul, MN |

Wayne, That looks to be a beautiful plane. I might look into a 608 soon; my type-4 is quite difficult to get adjuted correctly. I’ll let you know if I see a lever cap….. -- Chris |

Thanks. I try to stay with the ones that have the screw that allows you to adjust the frog. But the bedrock style are so nice given that you can adjust mouth without having to remove the blade. -- We must guard our enthusiasm as we would our life - James Krenov |
