I have been collecting, salvaging, and storing heart pine lumber here and there for a year or two now and have finally determined that at least part of that lumber will become new face frames, doors, and drawer fronts for our kitchen. Part of the existing cabinet carcasses will be recycled and given new fronts and doors. The remainder will be newly constructed carcasses that I will make myself. As the salvaged wood has been collected, I have denailed it, brushed it with a wire brush to get the bulk of the dust and dirt off of it and then stacked it on my lumber rack to await use. I have jointed, planed and applied undiluted boiled linseed oil to a couple of sample pieces just to see what the result would be. I like it OK but was wondering if I could thin it 50/50 with mineral spirits to get the deeper penetration and a similar look. The wood is very dry and really seems to need a penetrating oil to revive it. What are your thoughts on diluted boiled linseed oill? Is there an alternative that you would prefer? What would you suggest for a top coat? I have read a little about Waterlox but have never used it. We want a finish with very little gloss. -- Jesus was a Jewish carpenter. |
