Topic tags/keywords: question cherry bandsaw drill-driver lathe planer biscuit joiner joining shaker

Hi all,
I have been asked to make a an shaker coffee table that has adjustable legs so it can serve a dual purpose; coffee table that can be raised to serve as a dining room table. I thought about two method, one being the scissor type which I really don’t like and the other was a simple post in a box using dowels to raise and lower it. Then I thought what method do the Amish use?? Upon googling it, didn’t come across any information. Is this some sort well kept secret in shaker furniture making?
Thanks

Can’t help you with the Amish version, but I like your idea of using dowels, or

maybe make it telescopic and not use dowels.

Have fun Mrjinx007 and I’m looking forward to see how it turns out.

Thanks wahi609,
I will check on the telescopic ones. The problem with the solutions I’ve come up with so far is each of the 4 legs would need to be adjusted. I may go with a trestle desk.

They did something like this on Spike TV’s furniture show, desks instead of dining tables but similar idea. I’m having a hard imagining this in a shaker style. The X leg combo tables are the simplest.

The show wasn’t online last I checked but it would be on Spikes website. I’m on my phone but if you google “coffee table dining table combo” you’ll see what I mean.

Mrjinx,
Could you do something like this with a shaker shell?

Hey Candy,
That looks very promising. I could even make a apron to go all the way around it. Thanks a bunch.
