Hi all,

I made a small (6×10”) box out of cherry with wenge keys. I’m looking for suggestions on what I should use to finish the piece. Most of the time I’m either painting or putting clear poly on my pieces, so I haven’t dealt much with other finishes.

Any suggestions?

I would use boiled linseed oil first, then either amber shellac or a wipe on poly similiar to the maloof formula.

Ditto to what Julian said. That is how I routinely finish my cherry pieces.

forget the poly it’s not a piece that will receive a lot of handling and abuse thru the ages. Just shellac or linseed oil dried for a aweek or 2 then shellac. the oil will give it that aged look right now. KB1KNOB

If the cherry has any variation in color that you would like to blend I would suggest Cherry colored Danish oil, two or three coats. If the color is good just use plain danish oil. Let it dry for a week and then you can either put on a paste wax and buff to a nice shine or seal it with a shellac, or poly. If you don’t top coat to seal it the cherry will darken much faster. It will darken eventually regardless.
