Yesterday. I went to a nice morning colors (flag raising) on the base. Usually, I’m already in the office and hard at it when the color go up, but this morning I felt a need to be there. It was a cloudy and chilly morning for an early September. The air was damp and strong breeze was blowing from the west across the piers. An unsually large number of base personnel were assembled at the flag pole. At exactly 8am, USS Constitution (across the harbor) fired her gun, as usual. All personnel in uniform snapped to attention. The Colors went up and then were slowly lowered to half mast. The base Captain then stepped up, put the troops at ease and said a few words. He commemorated and honored the fallen of 14 years ago. Including the 2 Coast Guardsmen that fell that day with the FDNY and the NYPD (I believe he said NYPD). After that, the Chaplin stepped forward to offer a prayer and asked for peace for all. After he completed his prayer, taps was played and we all retreated in silence. After that at 8:46am, USS Constitution fired her gun in memory of the first plane that hit the towers. Then once for every plane and her passengers and crew at the appropriate times.

It was a somber morning. For some reason it hit me hard this year. 14 years ago I was still working for the same command and flying the same desk. never once when I’m on the base do I ever feel unsafe. I can’t help be feel honored and privileged to be working for and with some of the finest men and women to wear our Nations uniform.

I lift my glass to all the men and women that wear the uniform of our armed forces. We can rest easy because they have the watch.

An extra special Cheers, to the US Coast Guard.
