Hi. I needed some tool therapy today. Went for 1 hr drive to city I rarely go to. Stopped at Habitat restore. NOTHING. Then went to antique shop. Old tools no prices on them, when I asked price. EXPENSIVE. Took off to another town on way home. Another Antique shop. ONCE AGAIN no price sticker on tools. I asked about a wooden mallet…..$12. SOLD, then asked about a bedrock 605 hand plane…......(thinking he would want $50+).....$12. SOLD, then asked if he had any wooden moulding planes. Said he does somewhere. We finally found one…......how much you give me he asked…..I tried ALL 3 for $36. Nope..$40 and no tax…...SOLD
I was happy…..he was happy.
This is a sign of old planes are not worth much anymore.
I will have pics tomorrow.

Well worth the run out then! Sounds like you got some bargains :)

To be honest, I don’t think it is that old planes are not worth much, in many cases if they took the time to do them up, they would probably fetch more than new ones, the quality is not there anymore.

Here in Colombia the only place you can get 2nd hand tools is in the pawn shops, there are always a stack of hand planes, but I have only ever found one at a bargain price, the others, which haven’t been touched, are priced higher than new ones :( I certainly think that if someone were to start a business in doing up and selling old handtools, maybe accepting trade-ins, they would make a good living.

Look forward to seeing your Pics!
