Seems like H.D. is moving Porter Cable out the door and going with Freud bits for now on. Not every store may have this but mine just put all of the P.C. bits on clearance. Most are 50% to 75% off! So get them while you can.

How are Porter-Cable bits these days? I used to use them almost exclusively 10-15 years ago but I found they dulled and burn out rather quickly so I switched mostly to CMT. Now I use Rockler, Amana, Whiteside, and Woodcraft’s green ones, but still favor CMT if the price isn’t too much higher. I remember Fine Woodworking doing a test on router bits some time after I switched and they had the same problem. PC bits dulled and burned up before they could even finish some of the test cuts. It looks like they might have redesigned them since then, or at least changed the color to the candy apple red, but I’m wondering if they are any better? I haven’t taken a chance and bought one in quite a while now.

Now I wonder if PC is getting out of the router bit business. Or maybe coming out with new ones?

I hit my nearest HD this evening and not a single PC router bit to be found, the display was all Freud Diablo already. I even asked and the guy said ‘Yeah they’re right her… Oh, I guess we discontinued them…”

Porter cable makes a high end bit and has excellent quality. My guess is they are getting a better price on Freud which is why they are selling them. I prefer the Amana bits and the majority of my customers, commercial cabinet shops and mills, will use the Amana bits. Great quality bits!

This test done by Fine Woodworking rates Porter-Cable as only Fair:

This test done by Fine Woodworking said Porter-Cable bits wore out before the top 4 bits which included Amana and CMT:

I was just at the Rockler store and they had all the 1/4” shaft ones for $4.99 each on an end cap. I must have missed this the first time I went lookin’ there or they recently put them out. I picked up a couple bottom bearing 3/8” laminate trimming bits, figured for $5 can’t go wrong even if they don’t last long.
