So i have been looking at the bat house handbook and all the plans have 3/4” spacers. Are they necessary or can the sides just be dadoed to accept the roosting boards? The spacers would help making the sides thicker so it would help hold in heat. Am I looking at it wrong, and what have you guys who have made them had the best occupancy rate. I was going to build a nursing house and a couple four or five chamber houses for a buddy who just purchased 12 acres of wooded property that has numerous ponds, pastures and streams around him.

Don’t know where you are, but I built one for a friend using plans found here:
which is geared for Florida locations. I’m not sure the spacers are for anything other than to make it easy to space the interior panels, but it doesn’t specifically state it in the article, so I’m not sure.

There are some non profit organizations that will help you with plans for bats that live in your area.

I learned they can be very specific to species.

I would look them up and build the box that they recommend for your area. They will provide all the guidance you need.

They have bought some of the largest bat sanctuaries here in Texas.

I have looked into that and most are just pointing to the batcon style ones. I guess I will bust a dozen or so out and see how they work. I know positioning is the most important thing.

Have your say...
