I’m currently attempting to design a new bed for my wife and I but I had some questions. Does anyone know of some good sources for the fundamentals (e.g. bed height and overall dimensions) of bed design?

Overall? I would assume the overall dimensions are determined by the matress sizes which are readily available on the web in numerous places. The matress sizes plus the material dimensions would determine the width and lengths overall. The height is more a utilitarian issue based on personal need or preference.

I know the basic dimensions of a queen mattress (60” x 80”) but I wasn’t sure if there was any consensus on how much space to leave on the ends for bedding. I was also wondering if there was anything out there that could give me an overall idea of the pros and cons of different knockdown hardware. My biggest challenge with woodworking is project design so I need all the help/pointers I can get.

Now that is a good question. Sorry I misunderstood. I would only be guessing and I guess the issue would be room to make the bed (proudly to say this is something I don’t do often :)) The fitted bed sheets and possibly a fitted pad and the other top sheet are probably the only bed clothes to need room so I would think an inch is more than enough room. So…62”x 82” inside would be ok.

As far as knock down hardware…I saw some specs on a bed site (there are hundreds) last week with some good information. I’m sure there are a dozen lumberjocks on here with personal experience on the hardware.

I just purchased plan for a bed for the same reason I like the design but I do plan to make some changes and the plans have given me a starting point for the dimensions the plan is for a queen size but has dimensions for other sizes as well. As far as the knock down hardware I like the idea myself and plan to incorporate in my design (Rockler has some nice knock down hardware)
