Had an interesting conversation today with a principle in the tung oil business . He is out of high quality oil .Seems that the plantations growing it have more value doing something else (break-up value ). This has me worried .

Which plantations?
Tung oil is produced on five continents.

Rob (and anyone else reading this): Do you use pure tung oil, or ‘tung oil finish?’ You probably know all about this, but I found out early this year that anything with “Finish” tacked onto the end (tung oil finish, teak oil finish, etc) is likely not to contain any of the actual stated oil in it, but rather blends of other things intended to give similar effects. I had picked up “teak oil finish” at Home Depot and only later learned that it didn’t actually contain any teak oil (i.e. oil from the Common Teak tree).

I use 100 % pure as a base in my applications .I buy from two sources and it comes as heat treated or raw with slightly different properties . I will have more info on this subject by mid week .On any of the mixes you buy ,ask for a MSDS , which should give strong clues as to contents.Call any of the company’s , get past the know-nots , and almost always it is possible to get a wealth of info on pros and cons of their of their products and a feel for their proprietary mixes. Tung oil is one of the few quality finishes still legal in this state . Need I say more-

Gary:

Danish Oil isn’t from Denmark.

Mineral Oil doesn’t contain minerals.

No babies were harmed in the production of Baby Oil. :)

Home improvement centers and consumers retailers don’t sell artisan wood finishing products. :(
