I am looking for any suggestions on hollowing out about 8” down from the top of a 4×4 post. I am interested in mimicking the deck railing post in this picture. The only idea that i can come up with is to use a large Forstner Bit, however this won’t leave me with a square hole. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks

That one is jointed.
Why not do the same?

I never noticed that before, and now that you say that, it makes total sense. Wow…i feel dumb…
I can install a 4×4 green treated post, and then make a sleeve out of 3/8” cedar with the design routed in it.

Atta boy!
Don’t beat yourself up needlessly.
Life will to that without the asking.

Cheers
