I have always had to deal with aligning the fence parallel to saw blade. Even after adjusting fence I still can have the problem. One way I have been using is to measure (using a tape measure) the distance from the front and back of blade to fence. Still not a perfect method. With all ths frustration I have designed a “fence-lign”(as I call it) tool to assure the fence is parallel to saw blade for desired width of cut. Its easy to set fence and assures perfec parallel alignment to saw blade. Of course blade is parallel to miter gage slot to begin with. My question is this. Do any of you have your own techniques ? And two, do you think there might be a market for my “fence-lign?” If so, I may get a patent and get it on the market.

“Even after adjusting fence I still can have the problem.”

I’d say you’ve got a problem with your fence. I’ve been lucky, with my Uni-fence I’ve only had to actually set it once. I check it regularly but it’s stayed dead on.

There is always a market, it’s a matter of how big the market based the quality of craftsmanship and precision.
Good luck with the product!

Woodpayne, as far as setting the fence to blade alignment I use a dial indicator to do this and routinely get it around 0.003” or less. Like RetiredCoastie, I check mine regularly and it does not need adjustment.

But on my old Craftsman saw this was not the case. The front and rear of the fence did not track each other well so it constantly needed alignment.

Whether there is a market or not for your fence-lign it is possible that there is. I am always glad to see someone benefit financially from a product that they have developed.

I have a 70s Craftsman which has fence problems. I just measure from the miter slots for precison cuts. I suppose there could be a market if it were cheap enough. With after market fences starting at $300, anyone who is contemplating a new gadget is probably considering upgrading the fence. If I get into more precision wood working, I will probably go the new fence route.

I have the Powermatic PM2000 and have not had to do much adjusting to it since I set it up the first time around. I use a dial indicator and have the rear of the fence tailed away from the blade by about 0.003” just to be sure it is not pinching the stock in on the rear of the blade.
With the dial indicator it is so easy (and fast) to do that I do check the fence once a month or so just to be sure but it always is right. I will continue to check though!

Here is the document that I followed, not to a tee, but pretty close for my previous table saw. I got some tubing from a small welding shop for around 7 bucks that fit the bill :) This made my measurements and cuts more precise and i didn’t spend all day measuring and possibly having a cut that was not good.

That’s a good link, thanks. I was going to modify my Craftsman fence, but it isn’t worth it:-)) I’ll add that to me to do list. I’ll probably get to it in the afterlife ;-))
