Would you spend $500 on a Performax 16-32 built in 2001 that works well. Would you drive 4 hours one way to get it?

I considered 2 recently, one at $650, the second at $700. My target price is $400, but I don’t have one yet…so maybe $400 isn’t enough. But I haven’t driven 4 hours one way to get any tool (did go 3 hours once). Driving that far only to see the tool isn’t quite what you expected is what would worry me. If you knew the seller and had faith in the description, that would be a different story (my case on that 3 hour drive).

Yes! I’ve had one for 15 years. If I needed to replace it I would definitely check it out.

yep – - I have this sander, this year’s version.

Only thing I have seen negative on these (other than that the open end design can flex – - I haven’t experienced that) is that tracking the drive belt can be tricky, and there is a rubber conveyer available after market.
So far mine is just fine (Jet 16-32 ’ Plus’).

The 99 dollar replacement feed belt link is below. (I cannot vouch for it – - my unit is working fine… but I suppose if it started acting up, I would give it a shot)
Maybe the unit you are looking at has this ‘upgrade’ already??

Thanks guys for the replies. Had it lined up to drive from Indy to Chicago for a $500 Performax. Asked for a video of it working and arranged to meet up today (this was on Wednesday) to buy it. I said if you send me a video of it working, consider it sold and I would pay full asking price.

He never sent a video and on Thursday night I texted him and asked for the video before I made the drive. He told me he sold it to a guy because he really needed it out of the garage. He gives me some line about sorry and usually when this happens a much better deal comes along. I’m furious. I’ve been looking for over a month on CL for a used JET or Performax and there’s NOTHING within a 4 hour drive.

So I just glance hopelessly on CL on Thursday night after this conversation and find a Jet 16-32 for $900. What do you know, some guy JUST LISTED one. What are the odds, maybe Chicago was right. So I email the guy, tell him I’m extremely interested and I would bring cash on Friday afternoon (less than 16 hours later) and buy it. It’s 45 minutes from my house. He agrees to sell it to me. I wake up Friday morning, send a text for final arrangements. He tells me he just sold it to a guy.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!? Is it me, am I expecting too much? I made arrangements with 2 guys, I didn’t low ball and offered to pay asking price. NOBODY pays asking price nowadays. And I got stiffed, TWICE!!

I’m livid that people are this worthless. So I said, the heck with it. I’m sucking it up and driving to Rockler in the morning to pick up a new one. I didn’t want to spend the money but figured I would get a new one with warranty instead of having to deal with crappy human beings. Maybe as a pediatric RN, this is why I’d rather work with kids than adults. And having a loner hobby like woodworking on the side, maybe I’ll just give up adults all around!

Thanks for hearing me vent.

Peoples word means nothing anymore. Last year I was going to buy a Ford F150 from a guy and went to see it, took a test drive and told him I would take it. We shook hands and then he said he had to check with his wife first and he would call me back. I waited for the call that never came and called him the next day. He told me he sold it to someone else. Way too many people don’t have any personal integrity anymore.

If you can afford it buying new is usually better. I was in the same predicament and ended up buying a new SuperMax 19-38 and really glad I did. Yes, it cost me more but I now have one and like everyone else wonder how I got along without it.

Jgoeden…I am on the southside of indy. I have a 5 year old jet 16/32, perfect condition. Has the new sand smart, stand with casters. I was going to put on craigslist this weekend for $900. If you are interested, I will be home all weekend. Text me at 317-474-5283

On the other hand, I have sold things had people say they would buy it, turned away someone with cash in hand and the original person never showed or respond to my inquiries. I tell everyone that the first person who shows with cash gets it.

I can only sympathize with your opinions, having been down the CL road once or twice (on both sides, selling and buying). Yeah, it sucks… doubt about it. Sounds like you have a solution, congrats on the new sander.
