The subject of compatibility came up in another topic, and I thought I would post my response in its own topic here. Someone posted a reply about members “using the site for free”, but we are actually “content creators” who are supplying content for which the administration of the website receives money from advertisers and affiliate referrals. Ever notice how some of your text has words that are hyperlinked out to other sites? That’s how the Internet works. And those advertisements that show up in the right column and in the header are no accident either. I’m sure LJ isn’t hurting for ad revenue.

I do think it’s high time that the LJ admin starts making things better and easier for content creators. I think if they did, we’d see an increase in members, posts, and quality.

Here’s what I’d like to see:

An iOS app and better mobile compatibility
The ability to make simple photo edits when uploaded (rotation for newbies)
Better search options, including the ability to search jocks by location
Cull out all the non-member fake profiles that spam bots create, and make users prove they are human when signing up
The ability to embed limited size videos and GIFs into project posts. And adding more pictures for each project. Photobucket as a “workaround” for the site not being able to handle photos and videos is getting pretty tired.

To pay for the upgrades, why not have a store with mugs/shirts/hats, tools, and signs. I’d buy one in a heartbeat. I’d also be willing to pay for a premium membership and pay for the app on my iPad. I know there’s a contributor program, but I’m making my contributions by being active on the site. If I’m going to dip into my pockets, I need some actual improvements. I’ve been on here for over three years and haven’t noticed anything upgraded or improved.

I’d love to hear an admin response

Hear, hear.

Improved mobile device compatibility and improved photo handling/editing would be a step in the right direction.

Also, the “back” button in Firefox doesn’t work on lumberjocks.

The current programming is very limited for this site.

We hope to have solutions in the future.

The back button doesn’t seem to work right in most browsers, you have to mouse or click on the back button and scroll all the way down to the right spot.

Pretty vague answer from Cricket.

Since Android market share far out-strips iOS, I could argue for that as well.

Creating an app, while nice, isn’t necessary for websites that have a decent mobile version. And a mobile-aware website works for all devices.

As a software developer, that’s my professional opinion.

We should be able to stay logged in on more than one device (unless it already exists and I happened to miss it when logging in).

suggestion #1: anyone how makes a “NEW” profile without any history of projects, forums posts, etc… and then SPAMS (I’m talking to you Mrs Dorothy!) hundreds of posts with copy/paste… gets timed out / restricted til investigate or autobanned all together.

I would second the call for a LJ app. As I’m typing this on am Android device I’d go for Android but both would be beneficial for all. The site does work well for mobile browsers but there are some limitations such as very small buttons, incorrectly displayed text, and overlapping links. Also an app could give notifications and alerts to posts instead of emails.

But with all that said, an app would be a fairly large endeavour….would be nice though.

This is one that I really believe should be done. Place a sticky that is always the first topic you see no matter what. As soon as you choose “Forums” the very first topic, always, no matter what is “Click here before you post a ‘what table saw to buy’”. Therein you can post the links for the umpteen billion self same topics or just say “use the search function”. If the search doesnt answer the question then they can post. Otherwise it is deleted. The deleting has to be done so that this is taken serious.

Okay, call me crazy or cynical, but there is a thread in which Cricket asks for suggested enhancements. The thread has been recurrent since originally posted in April 2014 with over 300 posts. I don’t recall seeing a single “we listened to you and here is an enhancement requested by our users”. Is there any reason to expect that the site owners will ever listen to their content providers or act on those suggestions? Please show me a ray of hope.

Well actually they did listen and change one thing—posts used to list their age in hours or days and then 3 people made a big deal about how it should be changed to a date and time. They jumped right on that and changed it.

What has hurt this site more is the lack of moderation.

Aside form my above comment about a sticky for all who want someone else to pick their TS, yes. This, to me, is an issue. Please notice I said above that post that ignore the sticky get deleted. This goes hand-in-hand with having heavy handed moderators.

Make sticky #1 the rules. Sticky #2 dont post about a TS until you read this. Break #1 or #2 your post gets deleted. Keep it up and you get deleted.
