Topic tags/keywords: oak

hello everyone I couldn’t help my self but i need to gloat a little i hope and not get my feet knocked out from under me. I have a friend that told me his father had some wood he was needing to get rid of. it has been sitting in a shop and has been there for at least 12yrs. air drying and he needed to clear it out to put his backhoe and dump truck in the shop. I decided i would go take a look but couldn’t commit to anything so off me and the wifey go. we arrived and proceeded to the shop while he explains what he has and how long it has been in the shop building. I wasn’t expecting to much but once i seen it I had no problems in buying 1 stacked and sticker bundle there in the shop that was approx. 325 to 350 bd ft random width and no shorter that 8’ to 12’ long full 1 inch thick white oak ready to joint and plain. for 100 dollar bill. And then he showed me another bundle that has been outside covered and well protect for atleast 10 yrs. eveything full 1 inch by 10 to 12” wide and 10 to 12’ long white oak he asked what it was worth and I told him I have never bought wood like this before and had know clue. He asked me if i could use it and say um yeah. but i have know clue as to what it would cost and the gentleman said give a 100 dollar bill and its your. ther is approx. 400 to 450 board ft in that stack. so if i figure this right there is approx. 725 to 800 bd ft. of white oak that has air dryed for a min. of 10 yrs. please tell me i didn’t goof on this one and the wifey the whole time was giving me the evil eye you the one your doing what.

I guess you got a great buy. But, remember you helped him clean up his shop so that had to be worth something.

From the pics it looks like the planed wood is red oak.

Just a thought.

Nice grab in any case.

You got a wonderful buy without a doubt!! About a month ago I bought 150 bf of white oak (fas, kiln dried) and it cost me $2.00 a foot.

Paying $200 for this much lumber you made out like a bandit!!!

The real value will be in the making of something and the enjoyment of either selling your wares, saving even more money on something that you needed but could not afford etc. This is just raw material. The real value is in the finished product. I suspect you will multiply that savings many times. Make sure the wifey is up to speed on the real value of what you are doing…
