I am new here. I am a maker at heart. If I can make it rather than buy it I will without considering the costs. Don’t tell my wife.

I grew up remodeling homes, living in the country where if you wanted it you had to make it so I guess it is natural that I still like to build and make.

My last couple of projects have included a Fly Tying case and a Fishing Kayak. Both are posted on this site.
My next project will be planing forms for making bamboo fly rods. I am certain I can spend more building these out of wood than it would cost to buy them made of steel. so with nothing in my way I am looking for the right wood to get started.

Trying to find the hardest wood I can afford in dimensions of 2 3/4”X 2 1/2”x 72” will be interesting.
I am thinking mesquite – hickory??? or ? suggestions?

Thanks all.

Hey, welcome. You’ll like this place. Go up to the top and type fly rods in the search box. You’ll get lots of info

Hey, welcome to LJ’s, I really know what you mean about being a maker at heart, there is just a sense of pride you get when you stand back and look at a finished product and say “there it is, I made that” I like it even more if there were difficult challenges along the way, I think you will find there are a lot of people here like that.

Look forward to seeing your projects!

If there is any place in Texas I would live, it would be Austin…........ A really nice place with rolling hills and nice lake. Been there many times….......
