If anyone is interested in this let me know. I’m sure I could recreate this chair that I made and let it go for maybe only $10,000. It’s a great bargain and I’m sure it will go quick. -- Kyle Shipp, Michigan, http://battleshipp.blogspot.com |

I made a chess board in high school about 20 some years ago, how do I get it on the auction? I guess it just don’t get who you are impressing by paying that much for a chess board so you can tell your friends that it was made my so and so. -- Alex |

I would say between $12.00 and $18.00 at Kmart or Wallyworld…..but goes to show what is “collectible” and what is not…..It never ceases to amaze me what things fall into this – look at the guy who made millions selling pet rocks? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Nakashima George Katsutoshi Nakashima (May 24, 1905 – June 15, 1990) was a Japanese American woodworker, architect, and furniture maker who was one of the leading innovators of 20th Century furniture design and a father of the American craft movement. In 1983, he accepted the Order of the Sacred Treasure, an honor bestowed by the emperor of Japan and the Japanese government. I guess buying this chair for collectors who are gaga about this style is like buying a dress worn by Marilyn Monroe for those who are enamoured by her, etc. etc. |

While it’s fun to marvel at the seemingly outlandish value of such a mundane item, It must be remembered that, while functional, it’s a work of art. Designers such as Nakashima really defined our ideas of what contemporary furniture should be. In that context, I’m not sure that the price is so outrageous. -- Life is too short to suffer bad food and lousy speakers |

Lets face it if we got that kind of money for our work we would feel it was perfectly fine -- Jim from Heirloom Woodshop Southern Oregon |

I think Jim is right, I would love to get that kind of money, and I do hope that in some way these types of things makes what we do more valuable. Form me there is a lack of understanding as to how prices are driven for such things, but I am a function over form kinda person in large part so a purchase of this type for me would be of little value as it would serve little or no function other than to look at. -- Alex |

Design something like this on your own, no inspiration no imitation. Then purchase the materials and build it from start to finish flawlessly. After you are done sit back in it and ponder how much it is worth as an artist, from an artists perspective. You would be surprised at how you feel. Now 5k for a square jewelry box with few details…..that’s a different perspective. -- ~ Inspiring those who inspire me ~ |

1953 Corvette factory list $3,700 (only made 300). 2009 auction price $260,000 70 times the original price Lounger at 2009 auction price $12,000 to $18,000, could have been $170 to $250 back in Georges prime. The provenance available may mean papers saying they bought it from George. And to think I griped about $150 to replace the chair pads on my patio furniture this year. I should document that I got them from Mr. K and Mr. Mart. [I couldn’t afford, but could rationalize the corvette even without having Duntov signed papers.] Steve. |

The sad part is, for that kind of money, they probably won’t ever sit on it. Do you think George built the chair so no one would sit on it? I did some work at a house here and noticed the beautiful table in the dining room. I asked about it and they told me it was a Nakashima. They went to his shop and sat down with him and they designed it together from the ground up. It is a big table with 6 chairs and would by my estimation be worth a lot more than this one lounge chair. Maybe I should go back and asked to be in their will. -- ShawnH "A little knowledge is a tool for disaster." Chinese porverb |
