hi last week while using the planer, i could smell hot rubber and after a minute the planer stopped feeding but the motor was still running . i shut it down and after disassembling the right side of the housing i found the cover for the belt housing . when i opened the cover the belt was inside the housing cover. about 3 inches of the belt had delaminated. i was informed by both ereplacement parts and delta that the belt would be available in MARCH!!! i have found some other sites to contact for a belt.

has anyone out there who has this model had this problem? are there any tricks to reinstalling a new belt? any tensioning involved and if so how do i do it?

if you can answer asap i’d really appreciate it. i use this quite often and this is really handicapping me.

thanks to all,

Can you use an aftermarket link belt?

I have had one for over a year now with no problems.

Sorry to say that I can offer no advice on fixing it.

DeWalt ServiceNet is helpful in finding info and illustrations of any Delta, DeWalt, Porter-Cable, or Black & Decker tool you have. Just go to: and create a FREE user account. I searched, and they have Exploded drawings of your planer (so you can see how the planer is assembled). I don’t know if this will help, but seeing these drawings might give you a better idea what to do than your owner’s manual does (this is also found on ServiceNet).

I’ve had a Delta 12 1/2” for about 10 years now and I’ve burned up two belts – on my third.

Sorry, I can’t help on replacing the belt though. I just took the planer to the big city repair shop both times. It’s been a great little planer otherwise and I was probably running it too long and too hard (big hardwood boards and too big a “bite”) both times. I’m still on the original blades as well. They needed to be replaced a loooooong time ago.

I have the 22-580…Nice planer. Check out for a schematic and parts list. I find that Delta’s website uses the same schematic and Service Net was confusing…I couldn’t find any schematic.

I have my owners manual…What it shows is that the belt drives the blades and they in turn drive a gearbox that turns the rollers.

The belt part# is: 22-563. This of course is a Delta number. The owners manual, unfortunately, does not tell how to replace the belt. It’s time for me to do some preventive maintenance on my machine, so I’ll try and get you a better answer.

The belt is a “serpentine style” not “cog style” so the pulleys have to come off to replace it. I don’t see any other way. Man, it sure is dirty in there. Good luck! Hope I helped ya!

Rats! I must’ve edited this 6 times now.

There is a belt tensioning adjustment directly under the motor pulley. Don’t take the pulleys off. Simple fix.
