I took advantage of this weekend’s 15% off sale on Jet tools at Woodcraft to buy myself a birthday present. My new Jet 16-32 Plus drum sander works great! I was able to make the purchase a bit ahead of the official sale dates so the sander is sitting in my shop.

The local (45 miles away) Woodcraft store did not have the extension tables or casters in stock, so I went online to round out the package. I got the tables and they installed smoothly. The casters caused me to catch my breath. The price everywhere is about $140 for the set of four! A search showed that this has been discussed on the forum in the past. I am certain that they are really nice casters, what with the platinum ball bearings and diamond encrusted safety traction wheels, but really!!! I checked a bit more online, and decided to look around locally for generic replacements

The hole in the leg of the sander stand is 1/2”. The only casters I could find with shafts that size were non-locking. I went home disappointed, and decided to mount the standard adjustable feet for the time being. Well, the feet have 3/8” shafts to fit those 1/2” holes. Guess I can do the same. OK, back to Lowes. Found locking casters rated at 130 pounds of load each (sander total 160 pounds) were less than $7.00 each. The only catch I found when I was getting them was that although there was nothing to indicate it, the threads were metric. Had to buy some matching nuts as well. Good that I checked, because they looked like 3/8” to the eye. They work great. $30 for the set. The difference just about bought the extension table.

As far as the sander goes, it worked perfectly right out of the box. I loosened the shipping level of feed belt tension as directed and the belt tracks fine with no slipping under load. The drum is parallel to the table. Dust collection works well. I waited too long to get one of these!

BTW, the sale includes 15% on Powermatic tools as well as 10% on other items. Time to fill you shop!
