I do almost all my sharpening freehand but because the pig stickers are a difficult shape to hold for sharpening and narrow I’ve often thought a jig would be a good thing. LN has had this jig in development for awhile and it has finally shipped. There is a mortice chisel attachment coming and I think there is a Japanese attachment as well.

Anyway the main jig showed up a couple of days ago. Here are a photo of the LN jig and a Eclipse jig plus a Eclipse clone:

Nice. I just saw one on Ralph Boumenot’s blog and he said it was very well made, as one might expect from LN.

I’ve used the LN on a couple of Japanese paring chisels to re-establish the bevel. It’s not bad. The extra size makes setting the iron very easy, much easier than with a Eclipse, and it holds the iron very securely.

I’m impressed, not enough to change most of my sharpening from freehand to jig based but I expect it will be used much more than I have used jigs in the past.

Have your say...
