If you don’t care about your spelling do you care about the quality of your work? Are you as lazy about a job well done as you are about your spelling? Do you proof your work and not your writing? I don’t think so. Lazy in one area, lazy in another. It makes sense…

I’ve been woodworking for about 40 years now. I’m still working toward that perfect project with no mistakes. I’ve been working on my spelling for much longer that wooding working and still make mistakes.

I’m am not God and will continue mistakes in both woodworking and spelling. Really I’m only humane. If you expect perfection don’t read my post.

On a side note. My brother’s wife has here masters degree and then some. She makes here living (and a good one) as a grant writer. She is amazing with the English language. I’m thinking I should print out a bunch of your post and let her proof read them for grammar , punctuation, sentence structure and all that. I bet she could teach you a thing or two.

AlaskaGuy, after reading the above paragraphs I realize English isn’t your first language. I admire folks that speak two or more languages. Few Americans do.

It is sad but English is my first and only language. However I will continue to make post and put my ignorance out there for everyone to see. Those who have a problem with that can change the station.

I ll bite.

I disagree. I love to cook. I believe it is a horrible were I to use soup in a recipe. I feel dirty if I use store bought stock in a recipe. I refuse to use nonstick pans. I am a stickler about what I care about, like wood work and cooking. I dont care very much about grammer and punctuation. (At work I am pretty good with my writing, but they are paying for that.)

By the way, I wont dis you if you want to use condenced soup in your casarole. But as for me and my house, we will make our sauces from scratch.

This one had to be resurected, didnt it. It was my favorite thread with the exception of the “I hate SS or ridgid” Which ever one got shut down.

I used to enjoy the National Spelling Bee site http://spellingbee.com/. Then the members got a look at one of my weaker hand-cut dovetails. Now I am being shunned.

Chuckv, are you’re spelling and grammer better then you’re dovetails?

your write tho people who can not spell correctely must suck at every thing that they have done in they’re lifes just because they have decided to spend all they’re time learning how to woodwork. Just imagine a world were every one knowed how to spell purfectly and were college english majors instead of spending all that time doing the things that they actually are passionate about. I guess by your logic everyone in this world that is truly passionate and very good that the thing they are passionate about must in fact be a fraud if they also aren’t as passionate about learning how to speak english properly enough for the grammar nazi’s.

DKV it’s technology that’s making people dumber, handheld devices and the broken letters to sound like words (texting) is what’s destroying the English language.

Blackie, I don’t agree it’s technology making us dumb, it’s technology making us lazy. If you take the time to contribute to the site then you should take the time to proof what you write. If you don’t have pride in what you say how can you have pride in what you do? It’s all about attention to detail. The people that don’t care about spelling and grammar are the same people that say “close enough for government work”. I’m going to go out on a limb and make the statement that if you don’t care about the way you write then you probably don’t care about the quality of your woodworking. Am I right?

I do agree with you on the pride aspect but I have no comment on your theory as we are all different.

Edit In: with all that’s happening today in the USA, this could be a reality.

Since I started using computers (technology), my reading and especially my spelling has gotten better.

I haven’t walked in other peoples shoes, so I don’t criticize them. There could be many reasons a person doesn’t spell good, that doesn’t mean they don’t try, or the quality of their work suffers because of it.
As long as someone gets their point across is all that matters.
No need to be petty.

Maybe it’s just not as important to some people, as it is to you.

Would you criticize a person that has savant syndrome because they can’t spell?
