I didn’t intend for it to happen. It just did. Really. Sunday morning my dog and I went to our local recycling center (the green boxes for those of you who know what those are) to toss out some trash. As I drove in I spotted some boards sticking up out of the box. Lots of them. Knowing that periodically people in this area will tear down old houses, sheds, and barns, etc my heart skipped a beat. I drove up, got out, and upon further examination discovered that the entire 40 yard Dumpster was full (FULL to the bottom) of aged, weathered, beautiful old heart pine barn wood type lumber of all types and varieties. I couldn’t believe my luck. I began rummaging through and realized that I was going to need some assistance. I went home and recruited my wife and two of the children. (They weren’t as excited as me.) We hauled four full heaping truckloads of lumber home out of that Dumpster. I was over in there digging it out in a shameless sort of fashion. Since Sunday we have been de-nailing the boards and getting them stacked out in the shed. I have no idea what all of it will become but I know that the tongue and groove flooring that I found will be a perfect match for what I need to repair the porches on our 1880’s house. I will post some pictures of the projects when I get them going. I am just pleased that I was able to rescue this beautiful stuff from the landfill. I hesitated to post this here for fear that you folks would think I am a bit more nutzy than I really am. -- Jesus was a Jewish carpenter. |
