I believe due to the expansion of the internet and for many people who frequent forums, newsgroups, message boards, etc., displaying ones real name could be problematic. With the ever increasing number of weirdos in our world and using the internet as their main source of contact nowadays, saying the wrong thing can really set someone’s fire ablaze. Using a real name can help them locate you if they are that psychotic and want to do harm. Perhaps it seems a bit paranoid but I’ve actually witnessed this type of act and would advise most people to use anonymity, especially if they frequent the internet abundantly. |

They may be using nicknames because they are wanted felons or the IRS is looking for them, some have an alter ego, some don’t want their spouse to find them, some are trying to be ‘cool”. -- Roger, Rep. of Texas |

Actually, my real nickname is Jerbo. My sister gave me that name when we were kids. It came from my real name Jerry Boshear. I use Jerbo on all the other forums but here someone has it already so I went with Bothus. Bothus is shorthand for Both of us. It represents me and the little woman. ;; -- Professional kitchen designer, amature woodworker. |

My nickname is kinda self explanitory. Looks at my projects….All SCRAP wood. Scrappy -- Scrap Wood's the best...the projects are smaller, and so is the mess! |

I used a nickname mostly because I’ve had experiences being ‘flammed’ and such for being a woman. Thankfully, there’s none of that here :)) -- a little bit of stupid goes a long way |

Berg is my real ancient nick name but used only by my dear friend of 50 years, Peter, who passed WAY too young at 50 and his baby brother (who is a grandfather and would cringe at the “baby” reference but who is used to decades of harrasment. Sorry Jim). And yes we “knew” each other all our lives. something to consider is the business side of things. When some projects are posted I will immediately think “I bet that is a Todd A Clippinger” or “that is a Mark DeCou” or “a Dennis Mitchell” .... if you want your work known and your business known then using your real name is a great promotional tool. -- ~ Debbie, Canada (http://www.execulink.com/~yohan) |

This is one of the few forums where I used my real name, not sure why. I started my first username as a nickname and have used it ever since. And no one will ever look at my work and say that is a DeCou or Clppinger. I fall into the don’t use real name because of paranoia. I picked up the nickname Huff when I was in High School and it stayed with me when I was in the service.(In Viet Nam, a lot of the guys in my outfit had nicknames…..JJ, moses, lightning, speed brakes, lucky… just to remember a few.) Some of my close friends still call me huff. As far as business goes, The Hufford Furniture Group is my Co. name. I don’t use this site for business, just a great place to share my passion for woodworking with other woodworkers and get inspiration from them, so I try to keep it casual. No hang ups about using my real name, in fact now that I think about it, even a few of my customers call me huff. -- John @ Myrtle Beach |

It’s fine if your real name is tied to your business (then it’s free adverts) but otherwise I would like to limit the chances of identify theft as much as possible. My boyfriend already freaks enough about me posting pictures where you may see elements of our house – and someone may have traceability, etc. etc. I try to be careful. There are a lot of thieves and psychos out there. I flip out when I see some of you guys posting pictures of your shops and expensive equipment, and where you live…. unless you have a fully insured business I would always be wary about that. |

Mine is my real nickname. It started out as PW when I first joined the AF. I had joined a bowling league and my initials would come up on the board as “PW” when it was my turn. My name is Paul White. Over the years people have shortened it from PW to Pdub. I still answer to either one, and sometimes to a few others that aren’t quite as nice. LOL -- Paul, North Dakota, USAF Ret. |

Hasbeen99 is a username I came up with when I first started playing fantasy football in (you guessed it) 1999. I’m James and everyone tells, me “that’s just not right” like when I bought this fire truck for my company truck, or when I painted my whole workshop burnt orange when UT once the national championship in 2005 (its still burnt orange today even after I sold it), so since this is a woodworking website, I figured “Knot” would be appropriate. Besides A1Jim already had that nickname :-) -- James |
