I believe due to the expansion of the internet and for many people who frequent forums, newsgroups, message boards, etc., displaying ones real name could be problematic. With the ever increasing number of weirdos in our world and using the internet as their main source of contact nowadays, saying the wrong thing can really set someone’s fire ablaze. Using a real name can help them locate you if they are that psychotic and want to do harm.

Perhaps it seems a bit paranoid but I’ve actually witnessed this type of act and would advise most people to use anonymity, especially if they frequent the internet abundantly.

Hi GMman,
Perhaps this is a good place to introduce my desire to know how many Canadians there are in Lumberjocks. Not for any ulterior reason, just a matter of interest. I keep stumbling on more and find there are a few such as you that are quite close to New Brunswick. Just found Mark in Windsor for instance. You could say a pet peeve of mine. My nick name (Jackass) came from necessity when I registered with LJ”S. Hope you get your answer.

They may be using nicknames because they are wanted felons or the IRS is looking for them, some have an alter ego, some don’t want their spouse to find them, some are trying to be ‘cool”.
For whatever reasons to use a real name or nickname that we feel more comfortable with, it really doesn’t matter, all LJ’s are great guys – whoever they are?

Hi Jack
I am originally from Canada. My grandfather lived in St. Stephen and I had an Uncle that lived closer to where you are in Moncton. I have traveled all around down east Cabot Trail, Saint John, Summerside, Charlottetown, Fredericton etc etc. Haven’t been down that way in 30 years tho but I loved the countryside down there.

something to consider is the business side of things. When some projects are posted I will immediately think “I bet that is a Todd A Clippinger” or “that is a Mark DeCou” or “a Dennis Mitchell” .... if you want your work known and your business known then using your real name is a great promotional tool.

I picked up the nickname Huff when I was in High School and it stayed with me when I was in the service.(In Viet Nam, a lot of the guys in my outfit had nicknames…..JJ, moses, lightning, speed brakes, lucky… just to remember a few.) Some of my close friends still call me huff. As far as business goes, The Hufford Furniture Group is my Co. name. I don’t use this site for business, just a great place to share my passion for woodworking with other woodworkers and get inspiration from them, so I try to keep it casual. No hang ups about using my real name, in fact now that I think about it, even a few of my customers call me huff.

It’s fine if your real name is tied to your business (then it’s free adverts) but otherwise I would like to limit the chances of identify theft as much as possible.

My boyfriend already freaks enough about me posting pictures where you may see elements of our house – and someone may have traceability, etc. etc.

I try to be careful. There are a lot of thieves and psychos out there. I flip out when I see some of you guys posting pictures of your shops and expensive equipment, and where you live…. unless you have a fully insured business I would always be wary about that.
