Hey all,

We are about to put down some new carpet, and LOML wants me to screw down the sub-floor when we have the carpet up to help eliminate squeeks.

Being the good husband I am, I agreed but used the “I will need a new tool to make this happen.” line. The tool I want is an impact driver. To me, cordless or corded does not matter (although I tend to lean toward cordless). Main use will be for putting screw in, but it will definately see some use this spring building a play set for the kids in the back yard (lots of lag screws).

Air powered is out as I am not ready to upgrade my air compressor to handle it.

What are your suggestions? I have a couple of weeks to decide and I am starting now to get my research done.

Thanks in advance,
Rob Hix

Darn, there was a good thread on this. I tried to search for it with out any luck. I will keep looking.

Check out the new V28 from Milwaukee and the 36V from Dewalt. I’ve heard good things from users of both. If you’re just using it around the house for a project here and something there, I’d look for a reconditioned tool from the tool repair places. I’d imagine that anything newly repaired will do well with your two jobs.

Rob, I have a Craftsman 14.4v and a Dewalt 18v. They both work great. The Craftsman gets the job done, the Dewalt gets it done with authority. If I didn’t plan on using it a whole bunch, I believe that the Craftsman will serve You well.

I just bought the “On sale” Craftsman set of a 19volt drill and impact driver. ($99.00) It’s heavy but drives the big lag bolts better than any impact I’ve used in the past. I guess what you wanna look at is how many inch-pounds of torque it puts out. (This one is rated at 900 inch-pounds) The drill comes with a two speed gearbox which is great for drilling. This kit has just got all the neat features that I wanted. Some of these can be real expensive though. My bro-in-law is a pro-carpenter and uses Makita but also was commenting on the new Lithium impacts. You’re lookin’ at $300+ for those.

As for electric (and pneumatic) I haven’t been able to find one that has the 1/4” collar for driving screws. They are all 1/2” square post for impact sockets…way too big and cumbersome for what I do.

Glue and screw the subflooring to keep squeaks at a minimum.
