Hello everyone. I am a newbie to wood turning. My main desire is turning baseball bats with a maximum length of 36”. Now after reading both sets of reviews I have not come to a conclusion about which one to buy. The two I have been looking at are the Rigid WL12000 used with a nicer than HF tool set and the Harbor Freight Central Machinery 14×40 lathes. Both of these have up and down reviews. Still, I have not managed to find a review in relation to my project. Any opinions would be great. Also, if you know another type of inexpensive lathe that has a minimum of 36” between the centers, don’t be afraid to talk about it. Thanks

What is your max budget? Neither of those lathes are very sturdy, so if you can spend more, you should. Also, you would not be the first turner to say he was only going to turn spindles, then moved up to bowls. Neither of these lathes has the power, bearings and weight to handle bowls.

I’m new to turning also….
Sooo, I can’t speak to either lathe….

I just want to point out that Craigslist is your friend.
It is always loaded with lathes for sale (at least in my area).

Have your say...
