I was at Lowe’s yesterday checking out some stuff in the paint department and noticed they had some Jasco Prep & Primer on clearance for $1.28 a bottle. Regular price is a little over $6/bottle. It contains phosphoric acid which is the same stuff in naval jelly. I walked out with two bottles, went home and sprayed some on an old jointer with a rusty bed. I left it sit for 5 minutes, then rubbed it with some steel wool for a minute to remove a couple of the deeper spots. After I wiped it down, it looked as good as new.

I was going to pick some more up on the way to work this morning, but ran out of time. I looked on lowe’s site to see what other stores around might have it on clearance and found the price was down to $.28 a bottle at my local store. I found another store that had it for $.25 a bottle and I ended up ordering what they had left. Prices do vary by store, but you might find a deal in your area. Most other stores prices varied at $.42 $.70, $1.40, $2.00.

Still shows $6.98 a bottle for me. I guess I’ll keep working with the $4/lb citric acid powder from the local homebrew shop.

That’s a pretty impressive before & after.

It shows $6.98 a bottle in the Mission Valley store here in San Diego. I have a lot of Evaporust left, so I won’t sweat it.

I found numerous stores in the northeast that have it $2.00 or less.

$6.98/quart in Lafayette, LA. I’d buy a few at 25 cents to try. Looking at the OP’s results, color me impressed.

Update : I changed my local store to the other local Lowes (about 10 minutes away from the one that has it for $6.98), and the price dropped to $2.09.

Just an FYI, but phosphoric acid is a rust converter, not remover. It converts the iron oxide into iron phosphate, which you can then remove or leave as a protective (rust inhibiting) coating and paint over it. Evaporust works through chelation, removing the rust by bonding with it and pulling it away from the good metal into suspension.

Cheers,
Brad

Thanks for the heads up! All the stores in RI had regular pricing, but Seekonk, MA ($2-change), and North Attleboro, MA ($1.05) had them for cheap. I bought all 8 at N. Attleboro.
