Recently a branch of the KMS Tools chain opened in my home town. They stock some handplanes that appear to be the same as the Wood River/Borg planes reviewed in Popular Woodworking by Christopher Schwartz. They also have chisels and lathe tools that look like Wood River/Grizzly products. Most of them are marked “Forrester”. I decided to try out one of the block planes. Against a machinist square the bed, throat and body casting looked spot on. The blade honed easily and stood up to a week of use on maple well enough to keep me happy. In comparison with my Record block plane, the KMS tool is much better in terms of machining but is still inferior to my Lie-Nielsen and Veritas planes. Any other Canucks out there tried these tools?

Haven’t tried these yet. There is no KMS Tools close to Brandon.

Mark,

KMS took over from House of Tools in BC. Not sure how far east they go.
After two weeks the lever cap split across its width on the new block plane. KMS replaced the part no questions asked and the plane seems fine now. I am a bit wary tho as the break happened putting the plane into my pocket rather than during normal use. The body casting feels so durable that I can’t figure why the lever cap would be so fragile. Obvious now why the price was so low I guess.

I wondered what happened to the House of Tools. I will have to Google for their web page.

Hi.
I was wondering about more information on these tools aswell. I have a forrester bowl gouge and it seems to perform great as long as i keep it sharp, mind you i’m green to woodturning and have not tried any of the expensive tools. For the price it was worth every penny though.

Have your say...
