Topic tags/keywords: tormek grinder sharpening

Hi jocks,
I was at a rockler store this past week and the mngr put a Tormek t3 on the clearance table for $99..
I picked it up and ran to the check stand. Like so many of us I need serious help with sharpening, and hope(d) this would be my answer.
Here’s the rub… This thing has all the normal Tormek goodies/possibilities, but man is it built CHEAP. My main concern is the instability of the tool rest arms. They are set into plastic tubes that flexes under very slight pressure, this basically renders the thing useless. (in fact the new t4 is the same machine with the addition of a cast top that resolves this issue)
So I have two choices that I’m hoping you guys can help with.

1 return it and move on, or,
2 come up with a good modification to fix the stability issue. Google search comes up empty for a work around.

So far the only thought I have is to reinforce the top with plywood ….

Thanks for any ideas or advice

Here are a couple pics demonstrating the issue/difference.

Return it and move on. Not enough time in life to deal with poor design.

Check the parts list on the t-4, if the cast top is less than the price difference betwee $99 and the t-4
buy the top. Personally, I would probably build a new top out a nice hardwood if possible, just to
customize it.

I see the T-4 is $399 on Amazon. If you could solve the issue and keep your extra three hundred you would be well ahead of the game.

Have your say...
