Topic tags/keywords: tip question cherry maple

I have a question I would like some opinions / advice on. It’s in regards to jewerly box design and the grain orientation on the lid. Normally i design the lid with left to right grain flow. But on these to particular boxes I had some design restrictions because I had a limited amount of veneer on hand for the lids. So now I’m left with a set of lids and bottoms, one set has the standard left to right flow but the grain it self is kind of bland. The other has an up and down flow but a nice curly waterfall pattern.

My initial intentions were to just use the waterfall for the bottoms but now I’m having second thoughts about this. So what are your thoughts and opinions?

Pics are attached. Enhanced with spirits.

I would have no compunctions regarding using the waterfall for the lid because it is veneer and the box looks to be a square. FWIW

I actually kind of like the waterfall figure coming at me like you show on the left.

I agree. They both look really attractive.

Andy until you said I never thought about it like that and I agree that perhaps the waterfall does look best coming at viewer. I was already leaning in the direction of the waterfall pattern and after Andys comments I’m that much closer.

AandC the boxes are roughly 16×10 so they are not as square as the pictures make them look. When I posted them through PB it messed with the deminsions.

They were nice veneers, both were phenolic backed. I snagged them for nothing from a cabinet shop I worked at over the winter. The phenolic backing really makes the veneer a lot easier to handle, cut and glue up. But it’s kind of pricey unless you find some deal / connection.

Have your say...
