I have experience with pre-cat lacquers, I have sprayed automotive finishes (with catalyst) but have never tried a conversion varnish.

I’m building a walnut dining table and buffet and have been thinking about using the CV instead of the pre-cat thinking about the durability.

Does anybody have any advise regarding the CV, or do you think the pre-cat is durable enough for a dining table??
I am typically a heavy sprayer and have read about putting the CV on too heavy can cause cracking, so I’m a little hesitant about using the CV.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Bently, I normally spray pre-cat lacquers also, but have sprayed a conversion varnish a few times. I really didn’t have any problems with it, in fact, I was quite impressed with how easy it was to work with and how well it flowed out. I would probably just back off a little with your gun, but I don’t think you have to worry about a heavy coat unless you puddle your finish on.( lol) The only reason I don’t use a CV more often is the mixing and the shelf life. Good luck and hope you’re going to post some pics.

I have not sprayed CV; however I have used pre-cat lacquers on table tops and I found that it is a pretty durable finish. I too am a heavy sprayer and I think that has a lot to do with the durability that I get. The last top I sprayed I put 2 sealer coats and 1 top coat on it and I have not been called for any repair work on it.

This is the table and yes I know the legs are horrible and I changed them to bent lamination legs I just don’t have any pictures of them.

Thanks John, no puddles, more like lakes..lol I’ll back off a little though if I use it.

I appreciate your input Huckleberry, I’m a big fan of the pre-cats, I’ll probably end up using it. I’m not sure yet, I’m not in the mood to go to school of hard knocks on this customers job. I’ve got enough experience re-doing things. :)
