At the Grizzly tent sale, I picked up the G0624 Mini Lathe for $65. It was missing a couple tail stock parts. Took the lathe inside and they identified the parts. $25 later I have a lathe that works absolutely perfectly for a total of $90. This is the exact lathe I was hoping for. Cast iron, benchtop, small, variable speed, etc.

So, I’ve been eyeballing 2 chuck sets:
1) PSI Barracuda
2) Grizzly 2.75inch Chuck Set

In non-turner’s terms, I see the Griz has some black pegs, but the chuck looks smaller. The Barracuda looks larger, but doesn’t have the pegs.

Between theses sets (or others you may be aware of) can you advise me on a direction?

I’d like to start turning small bowls.

I use the Grizz chuck with good results.

I have the Barracuda and it works fine, but that Grizzly chuck looks good and includes the wide jaws for finishing bowl bottoms.

Is the Grizzly one smaller?

Mainly, is the 2.75” too small? Or will that be fine for a lathe of this size? 2.75 seems pretty small, so should I pay $10 more for a 3.75” or $50 more for a 5.5”?

Bill, which size do you have?

I can’t speak on the Grizzly, but I have the Barracuda and it has been terrific for anything I wanted to do.

I just got my new lathe (last month). And I have been saving up the pennies for a chuck too. I’m seriously considering the Nova Infinity. Looks like it’ll be a snap to change the jaws.
